The candle flickered in front of Charley, the bracelet glinting on the table between them. Shadows seemed to try to form around the room and then fell into nothingness. She tried to keep her focus on the nothing at the centre of the candle flame, but everything kept tugging at different parts of her brain. Where was Melissa and how had this bracelet ended up coming back to her? What was Thalassa up to? What was True doing right now? Oh god, had someone at work discovered her little book of worst customers that her friends used to read for laughs? Did anyone actually figure out what was wrong with the Slushie machine? How long was it until her last assignment was due and was there even the slightest hope of making it through the year?

Bracelet. Focus. She could do this.

Was this really Melissa’s bracelet, and if so, how did it get here? What was happening when she lost it – oh god, did someone take it from her? How does one distinguish different bracelets from each other? Do they have serial numbers? You could probably tell by DNA left on it; should she have brought Melissa’s hairbrush with her?

But finally, things began to change. Instead of giving up, instead of panicking, she found herself able to drift into story. She found herself on open seas, land only visible in the distance. Birds circled overhead – seagulls, perhaps even an albatross, and even this far out a few ducks were sitting on the water. Charley breathed in and out, trying to focus, trying to look beyond what she saw.

There was something shadowy moving just out of the corner of her eye. An impression of long, spindly legs, like a giant insect creeping towards her. Charley felt her heart rate going up, fear clutching her. She was starting to panic, breathing fast, wanting to be out of this place as much as she wanted any information to be revealed.

The candle went out. The room plunged into darkness.
